Food is not waste. Neither is our planet.
29 September 2023 International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste
The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is observed on 29 September following a Resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2019.
The decision is based on the urgent need to reduce large amounts of global food waste by 2030. Most food that goes to waste ends up in landfills, polluting the soil, water and air.
Food loss occurs in production, storage, processing and transport, and is often a mark of developing countries, while food waste is a result of decisions and actions by retailers, the service sector and consumers, and occurs in more developed countries.
A staggering third of annual food production for human consumption is lost or goes to waste while at the same time more than 821 million people are chronically undernourished.
An estimated 400,000 tonnes of food, or 97 kilograms per person, goes to waste in Croatia annually, with households accounting for the greatest share (77%).
Together we can raise awareness of the value of food and the importance of reducing food waste. The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is the best time to start, for all of us.
